Different seeds and feeders attract different birds here are some general guide lines:
Thistle Seed is very nutritious because it is high in oil and protein and considered the best seed for attracting many varieties of finches and small songbirds. Thistle Seed attracts Goldfinches, Purple Finches, Redpolls, Pine Siskins, and Indigo Buntings
Black Oil Sunflower Seed will attract a wide range of birds. Both small and large birds it's shell can easily be opened by all size birds. Also it is high in energy and a good source of protein for most birds. Black Oil Sunflower attracts birds like Cardinals, Nuthatches, Finches, Goldfinches, and Chickadees.
Striped Sunflower Seed appeals to larger birds because of its size and hard shell and it has higher oil content. Striped Sunflower Seed attract birds like Blue Jays, Woodpeckers, and Cardinals.
